Intermittent Fasting, Forest Walks, and One Glorious Meal

This past week was wonderfully quiet—and in the world of post-cancer treatment, “quiet” is my new love language. No Mayo Clinic marathons. No parking lot prayer circles. No elevated blood pressure from fighting with Jacksonville traffic. Just me, my wellness goals, and a delightful absence of waiting room chairs. Let’s dive into this week’s health…

Let’s dive into this week’s health and healing highlights:

✅ Intermittent Fasting Is Still My Jam

I stuck to my 16-hour fasting window each day, and one magical day, I hit 19 hours. No, I wasn’t shooting for gold medal fasting—I was just waiting to eat with my daughter after school. And let me tell you, that meal was worth every growl.

Fasting always reminds me how often we eat when we’re not hungry. We eat out of habit, boredom, or because someone once said, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Well, I’m no doctor, but I’m confident intermittent fasting is working for me: more energy, better focus, and a shrinking waistline (take that, chemo weight).

🍏 Fruit, Veggies, and the Occasional Dessert

My meals this week were simple, whole, and intentional. I asked myself before each one: “Am I actually hungry?” If not, the food waited. Revolutionary, I know.

Next week’s challenge? Eat slower. I tend to inhale my food like I’m training for a competitive speed-eating contest. Word on the street (and in a few health blogs) is that slower eating helps you feel full before you’ve cleaned your plate. We shall see.

🚶‍♀️ 10K Steps and Pikmin Friends

I hit 10,000 steps every single day. Some days, I started strong in the morning. Others, I found myself speed-walking in the evening like I was being chased by an invisible deadline. Either way, I got it done.

Evening walks now include meditative music and the sounds of chirping birds, courtesy of my playlist. Add in my Pikmin Bloom game and boom—I’m basically exploring the Amazon, minus the jungle sweat and actual bugs.

😴 Still Working on Sleep

Sleep—my elusive bestie. Weekdays, I average 5 to 6 hours. On weekends, I crash hard and score a glorious 8 or 9. I’m aiming for 7 hours a night, but getting to bed before 8 p.m. is tough when kids aren’t on that schedule. Also, my Galaxy Ring thinks I’m insane for trying to sleep that early. It literally judged me for going to bed at 7:45.

🏋️‍♀️ Body Composition Check-In

Saturday morning means one thing: body scan day. My weight fluctuates (shocking, I know), but my fat mass is trending downward, which I take as a win. The app says my skeletal muscle is “above normal,” but isn’t that a good thing? Who knew too much muscle could land you in the red zone?

💬 Upcoming: Oral Chemotherapy Chat

Next week, I’ll meet with my care team to discuss the oral chemo medication I’ll start soon. Not the most thrilling thing on the calendar, but it’s important. I’ll keep you posted.

So there you have it—a quiet week full of healthy routines, a few mental pep talks, and less sugar (minus that one donut, which I regret nothing about). I’m proud of where I am, and I’m even more excited for where I’m headed.

Until next time, keep walking, keep smiling, and if you eat the donut… savor every bite.
