Hands, Nails, and a Side of Surgery: This Week in My Cancer Chronicles

Not my fingernails!

This week has been fairly uneventful—well, if you don’t count my ongoing battle with my hands. Apparently, they decided they wanted all the attention. Between neuropathy and a stubborn nail infection, my fingers have been the divas of the week, demanding care, medication, and, at one point, an actual visit to the breast clinic. Yes, you read that right. A breast clinic appointment for my fingernails. But hey, it all started with the breast clinic, so why not let them have the full-circle experience?

The nurse visit was straightforward: a new round of antibiotics and another prescription to (hopefully) calm my neuropathy. Meanwhile, I’m babying my hands like they’re precious antiques, trying to manage the pain and swelling. But let’s face it—it’s becoming pretty clear that I’m going to lose a few fingernails. Several of them have already started separating from the nail bed, exposing a deeper opening that I really wish I hadn’t seen. It’s only a matter of time before they bid me farewell. In the meantime, I keep them trimmed to avoid any unfortunate snagging incidents.

Since my fingers have been throwing a tantrum, I went in for another acupuncture session, hoping for some relief. I was once again placed in a relaxing environment, ready for those magical needles to work their voodoo on me. As she placed the pins, I was desperately trying to feel anything in my fingers. And guess what? I think I did! I got a little tingle in two fingers on my right hand and a sensation in my right foot. But the real magic happened when she was working on my left hand—I felt a continuous sensation in my left pointer finger. When she asked if it was still going, I said yes, and she actually adjusted the needle, and poof—the sensation stopped! That was nothing short of amazing. So far, I’ve had two sessions without much lasting relief, but I’m holding onto hope that soon, my fingers will stop feeling like I’ve been rubbing them on sandpaper.

But the real headline of the week? Surgery is just days away. In a few short days, I’ll be going under the knife to remove the tainted breast tissue. And while I hope I’ll soon hear the words “complete remission,” I’m not exactly thrilled about the post-surgery experience. Having pain in both my hands and my boobs? Not exactly my dream recovery plan. But if this is the next step toward being cancer-free, I’ll take it.

And now, for the tastiest update—my missing taste buds have returned! Like long-lost friends, they have made their grand comeback, and let me tell you, I have been eating everything in sight. This has not been great for my waistline, as along with my taste buds, I’ve also found a few pounds. Whoops. So, I’m slowing down, returning to intermittent fasting, and treating every bite like it’s a brand-new experience. Because, honestly, after months of chemo messing with my food, it kind of is!

So, that’s the latest in my world—nail casualties, acupuncture experiments, a big surgery on the horizon, and a rekindled romance with food. Here’s hoping next week brings less finger drama and more good news. Stay tuned!
