Why Not Me?

Instead of asking “Why me?”, I found power in asking, “Why not me?” In this post, I reflect on my breast cancer journey through a lens of quiet strength, purpose, and acceptance — and why this shift in mindset changed everything.

I’ve heard it said a thousand times — “Why me?”
Why did this happen to me?
Why did I get breast cancer?
Why did my life have to change?

But lately, I’ve been sitting with a different question:
Why not me?

Why not someone strong?
Why not someone with a voice, a support system, and a quiet kind of grit?
Why not someone who can turn pain into purpose, fear into fight, and silence into storytelling?

Truth is, life doesn’t play favorites. None of us are exempt from struggle. But I’ve realized that instead of asking “why me?” in despair, I can ask “why not me?” with perspective.

Why not me… to show others what resilience looks like?
Why not me… to walk into treatment bundled up in jeans and layers, cold but committed?
Why not me… to remind others that comfort can coexist with courage, and healing doesn’t have to look glamorous?

I didn’t choose cancer. But I choose how I show up.
I choose to celebrate my 51st birthday dressed in joy and confidence — even got a temp fade to bring out the new curls.
I choose to laugh, even when neuropathy makes simple things harder.
I choose to keep going, even when my body says “rest.”

There’s power in the reframe.

Instead of asking why this happened to me, I’m using my breath, my platform, and my story to ask:
What can I do with what’s happened to me?

The answer, it turns out, is a lot.

To every woman walking a similar road, I see you. I honor your pain, but I also see your power. Maybe the question isn’t why me anymore. Maybe the question is: Now what?

Let’s keep going. One step, one treatment, one story at a time.
